The map belo
w shows the geographical view of the Windsor Link Railway.
The red lines show the Windsor Link North route, mostly running along existing rail track. The yellow highlighted areas (in Slough, Windsor, Wraysbury and Staines) show new track or works and the orange highlight shows restored track.
The green lines show the Windsor Link South route. This is an alternative to BAA's Airtrack proposal. The most significant difference is that the purpose of the WLR is to serve local towns, with Heathrow as one destination amongst many. Unlike Airtrack, therefore, the timetable will include stopping trains (e.g. at Ascot) as well as faster through trains.
The small lines either side of the red and green lines indicate where existing level crossings are proposed to be upgraded to bridges. These include at: Datchet, Egham, Sunninghill, Wokingham and Richmond. (The last two are not shown.) Not all of these are confirmed.
Also not shown on the map are additional works at Frimley, restoring the chord enabling trains to go to Farnborough.
Note that this map is for illustration only: the precise alignment of both new and restored rail links is yet to be finalised. If you have anything to say on exact alignment (e.g. if you live by a proposed new or upgraded section), please get in touch.
Included in the plans for the WLR is a major transport interchange at Chalvey, where the line crosses the M4 motorway. This will improve access to the whole of the rail network in the region and reduce pressure on the M4 to the east. It will also serve as a park-and-ride scheme for both Slough and Windsor, reducing local traffic problems. Similar interchanges are also being considered at sites off the M3 and M40 motorways.
