At the full council meeting last week the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead approved its new Local Transport Plan.
This is a very thick document but the relevant section, on page 73, lists three options for a new rail link connecting Heathrow to the borough. One of these is Slough’s WRAtH scheme; the second is the Airtrack scheme, now promoted by Wandsworth and other London boroughs as Airtrack Lite; and the third is the Windsor Link Railway (phase 2), for a more general purpose Heathrow connection serving the objectives of both the other two schemes. (The WLR is good for Reading and Slough, AND Windsor, Ascot, Bracknell and south London whereas the other two schemes only benefit one group or the other.)
Of course, being referred to doesn’t make a material difference to the WLR project. The company still needs to go through the official process (on which it is now making good progress). However, it is good to see RBWM policy aligning with central government’s, which now establishes a clear way forward for WLR based on its merits.
