Why is the Windsor Link Railway needed?

The government recognises that there is now general agreement on the need for infrastructure upgrades to support a growing economy.

The Windsor Link Railway (WLR) addresses a range of national and local transport and social issues including:

  • Traffic congestion (both in towns and between them)
  • Job losses (e.g. Windsor has lost 6,000 jobs in the last 5 years according to the local chamber and Maidenhead has plenty of empty office space)
  • Social deprivation (e.g. at Chalvey in Slough)
  • Air quality and other environmental issues
  • Greater returns for other strategic rail schemes such as Crossrail and HS2
