Transport Strategy for the South East

A new body called, Transport for the South East has launched a consultation on improving transport across the region. Their consultation event last Saturday at Gatwick included a wide range of consultees from bus network advocates to Friends of the Earth and Vision Zero (for zero deaths on the roads). Windsor Link's initial view is that the strategy is long on aspiration and short on specifics. It's a good start, however: for example, they propose putting an end to 'predict-and-provide' and building ever-more roads. [...]

Government announces new policy for Heathrow connections

Getting the announcement out just before the election period, the government has announced a new policy for connecting Heathrow Airport to the south. The Southern Rail Link to Heathrow (SRLtH) acronym is gone, replaced by a more general Southern Access to Heathrow (SAtH). The change seems to be that whereas the former presupposed the solution, a single, expensive, heavy rail link from Terminal 5 to the south via Staines, a 'silver bullet' in their words, the latter is more open. The government says: The [...]

Is rail spending balanced between north and south?

The Infrastructure Projects Authority doesn't think so. Perhaps this is why there’s a Windsor Link in Manchester but as yet no Windsor Link in Windsor. The Windsor Link in Manchester is a relatively cheap missing link in the network that gives rail users new journey opportunities, reduced journey times and improved reliability. Like the nearby Ordsall Chord (pictured), it fixes historical anomalies and it’s been a great success. As HS2's future is cast into doubt, it’s time, however, to ask about the long-term costs [...]

This requires all schemes currently in progress, including the proposed western and southern rail links to the airport, to adapt [...]

TfL calls for greater commitment to Heathrow links

The New Civil Engineer reports today that Alex Williams, City Planning Director for Transport for London, has called for firm commitments to providing additional infrastructure for linking Heathrow, saying “What we want is firm commitments that Western Rail access happens, and Southern Rail access happens, and it happens in a way that genuinely increases capacity. “Our concern is that neither are firmly committed.” New Civil Engineer also reports: [The] Windsor Link Railway would be expected to link the Great Western and South Western franchise [...]
